WIDOW_remix is an alternate version of the original Widow performance-video in which a woman wearing a mid-century style black dress and unfurling belt performs a sequence of movements while constrained within a stark, narrow white interior. Appropriating the contrasting retro-futuristic imagery of Widow, the remix version is a highly abstracted edit that abandons the choreographic structure of the original video-performance. The result is a cut-up collage style that allows the viewer to merge with the protagonist’s unrestrained, emotive experience hovering on the edge of pleasure and pain.

Desert Widow
| 2014
Created and performed by Jil Guyon

Desert Widow is part performance documentation, part photographic cinematography. It features a woman driven into a vast landscape by forces beyond her control. As she traverses the shifting tableau of desert topography she performs a sequence of ritualized actions. Day and night converge, as do land and water, creating a subtle yet dramatic interplay between light, movement, music, silence, and stillness. Through this melding of the pictorial with the performative, Desert Widow is a mediation on loss and renewal.

Vigil is a video installation that features a nameless woman in a black dress slowly crossing an undefined, stark landscape. Extending from her dress, a trail of cloth symbolic of her mourning, blows in the wind as the woman moves through a time and space with no beginning or end. Her meditative stillness combines with electronic sound to create an otherworldly visual intensity.

WW is a sci-fi, psychedelic exploration of one woman’s interior world. With its surrealist use of artifice and doubling, the video documents the nameless woman performing a sequence of precisely choreographed gestures within a mysterious white interior. The shifting tableau of imagery and abstraction merge with a haunting, electronic sound score to evoke an atmosphere of terror and loss.

Based on a live solo performance, Widow depicts the gradual unraveling of one woman’s interior world. The mystery of her psychological condition is gradually revealed through suspenseful stillness, sharp gestures and emotional extremes. Precisely choreographed gestures merge with layered costume, music, sound, and silence to create a sequence of images evocative of personal loss and the struggle to transcend.
